Power customers are increasingly becoming targets for scam artists

Scammers have been calling our customers posing as Grant PUD employees who are threatening to shut off their power for unpaid bills unless an immediate payment is made. These scams are a nationwide problem. Read more about them here. There are things you can do to protect yourself against these types of scams.

If you receive such a call:

The best way to verify the legitimacy of the call is to hang up and call our customer service number at (509) 766-2505 or (800) 422-3199. It's important to note that some sophisticated scammers can set up their caller ID to make it look like the call is coming from Grant PUD. We do make courtesy calls to our customers who are behind on their power bills, but we promise we will not take offense if you hang up and call us back.

Things you should never do:

One of the ways scammers insulate themselves from investigation and prosecution is by demanding that their victims purchase a pre-paid credit card and make a payment over the phone. This should be an immediate red flag. Also, do not arrange to meet anyone to make a payment on your account except at a Grant PUD payment location and to an employee who works at the location.

Always verify the legitimacy of the caller before you give out personal information such as credit card numbers, banking information or your Social Security number. The best way to verify the identity of the caller is to hang up and call our number.

Sometimes criminals pose as utility employees to gain access inside your home. Since your meter is on the outside of your home, we rarely need access inside. Never let anyone who claims to be from Grant PUD inside your home without proper identification. Call us to verify the need for the person to be in your home. If anything appears to be suspicious, call 911.

How can I track my Grant PUD balance?
